Rules for Formatting Screenplay

  • Always have a cover page
  • Every character that has a speaking role is in capital letters
  • Capitalize any sound that is important to the narrative
  • Dialogue is formatted in the center
  • Use master headers for location 
  • Put the action or what is taking place under the master header
  • Put o.s if it's off screen, put o.c if it's off camera and put v.o if it's a voice over
  • Use a sub heading when it is in the same location but in a new part of the location
  • When action interrupts dialogue make a new indentation
  • Write out all numbers because each page has to be a minute long
  • If something needs emphasis underline
  • Indicate who you are talking to
